I recently decided to run my xbox 360 through my laptop monitor using HDMI, however once I connect the two with a HDMI cable nothing happens. How do I change the monitor input to show the xbox 360 screen and and play the sound through my laptop speakers?

You don't. The HDMI port on your laptop is an output, so that you can plug your laptop into a monitor or TV set, not so you can plug something else in and see it on your laptop's screen.
