I have just started at University and the current setup is an Ethernet connection which comes out of the wall and goes into the back of my computer. I then have an Xbox 360 which is not currently connected to the Internet (Xbox Live). Unfortunately, since the source cable from the wall is an Ethernet cable, it means that I cannot run my Router which requires the standard RJ45 connection into the "Internet" socket. I have been told by my accommodation that it is completely possible to use the Xbox 360 and a computer at the same time on the Internet using the provided connection. However, I cannot see how I can split the Ethernet to run both my computer AND Xbox 360 without the use of a specific type of router, unless there is a product which supports 3+ Ethernet connections and uses one as a source??How can I setup my computer and Xbox 360 console to run together on the Internet?

If you get a router nowadays it will have 5 ports for a rj45 in the back.
One for uplink - internet connection from the wall and the rest are for computers and xboxs or shares.

More than likely you will have to purchase a router that supports those plug ins to allow more devices such as your xbox to connect to the internet . The more hassle free way is to just get a wireless router . I am pretty sure that it does support wireless connectivity . But don't hold me to that .

On friday i bought an xbox 360 arcade. Today it had 3 of the red lights flashing on the ring of light. I am taking my xbox to game-stop to get a new system. Always take breaks between playing. Never Play nore than 3 or 4 hours at a time allowing 1 hour breaks. Make sure your box isnt on carpet or enclosed in a entertainment center. DO NOT BUY AN INTERCOOLER they will break your xbox. Allow air flow on the back of the system. Make sure your xbox isnt laying down keep it straight up (vertical). If you can go on your local craigslist and type in "xbox fan mod'' or "xbox mod'' that way you can mod your fans to KEEP THEM RUNNING TOP SPEED i have gotten it done and it was only $10 it truely works
You could get a cooling fan for the system which will help prolong the life. Also I would recommend keeping your console horizontally and on a stand so the air can circulate around the console.
Just remember that in the majority of cases the xbox overheats and thus causing the red lights. Try to use some common sense as to what will keep your system as cool as possible.

well, i have an xbox arcade too, i've had it for about a year now and i've never had a red ring. what i did it's i bough an laptop cooler for about 3 dollars on ebay. and that helps a lot. the good thing about it it's that it's power source it's an usb port so you can plug it in the back of your xbox. another good thing about it it's not loud(not louder than your xbox) and it's always gonna be on, as long as your xbox it's pluged in. and of course, it's cheap.

i have a small 6 inch fan next to mine in the summer and i also have it up on 4 blocks that are 2-3 inches tall to keep a good amount of air flow around it.i also take the vacuum to all of the little holes at least once or twice a month.you may want to keep the power box up on some thing so there is some air flow around that to because that can over heat also.hope this helps.

theres the charger that charges 2 rechargable battery packs at once and i think plugs into a wall socket. there is also another that is sold on ebay for like 5 bucks that comes with a usb charger that plugs into ur 360 and the other end connects to the battery pack it comes with. the other option is the microsoft rechargable kit which comes with a rechargable battery and connect to ur usb port in the 360 and to the slot between the bumpers on your controllor. when i charge my battery pack it takes about 2-3 hrs for a decent charge. if you want it to last longer tho i suggest charging it wile you sleep at night (6-8hrs) this option will let you play for like 2days straight and still have like a bar left on your battery indicator. you can also use AA batteries. i suggest the brand that came originally, they tend to last longer than other brand. or you could use rechargable AA batteries (make sure you have a charger for them lol)

HOWEVER. You can download xbox 360 games and burn them to a verbatim dvd+-R DL disc, and play it just fine!
With the new update (Fall Update)... you can install games to your hard-drive and they load faster, but you must still have the disc in the drive. So not yet can you play COMPLETELY from your hard-drive!
To the 1st poster.... perhaps you should KNOW something before you go spitting off at the (mouth) fingers!
The best way to download games... private tracker sites. I won't name any, but just do a little bit of research... and you will definitely find your answers! I was a n00b once. Just do your research, you will learn faster that way!
oh and like seth said... you can play on xbox-live, but it takes you making sure your games are patched correctly! a program called mXuXlXlXeXtXeXrX will get the trick done (minus the X's). That will let you know the region, if it's patched and up to date, pretty much everything! minus burn it!

I have tried to connect 2 xbox 360 consoles through my router to get on Xbox live, but only one of them can get on. The other one has its DNS test fail on me even though the IP test passes. In terms of using a router, this is absolutely possible. Make SURE that you are using a router indeed though. Routers and switches physically can look almost identical but the underlying layers in the operations that each perform are much different. A router should be transparent to your ISP and if you have NAT (Network Address Translation) turned on, it should issue 192.168.x.x IP addresses to your Xbox 360. Now if you have NAT turned off, both Xbox 360s will attempt to go to your ISP and register an IP address over the one connection. This will deny one or the other of a connection unless your ISP has issued you more than one IP address which usually costs about 5 dollars extra a month. If you really have a router, double check to make sure NAT is turned - along with DHCP on and then setup your Xbox 360s to automatically obtain an IP address from your router. Usually the routers should be configured to do this out of the box like linksys or netgear. Also double check your cables to make sure that you have your internet connection from your modem to the router plugged into the WAN port and that the Xbox 360s are on one of the LAN or Local Area Network ports. I currently have 2 Xbox 360s, 2 PCs and a laptop connected to the internet simultaneously through my router with no problems. Just think of your router as a splitter. Make sure that on the Xbox 360 that you are failing at the DNS level that the setting for your DNS server are identical to that of the console that is able to connect. Yes it is appropriate for a 9year old. I would just recommend not giving him online on it until atleast 12 because of online jerks that constantly curse and think they are cool because they can make fun of a little kid. You should by the black one (aka the elite) because it is guaranteed to last longer then the white one but costs just a little bit more. There is no difference besides which one is able to last longer. My brother is now 10 and has had his own xbox for 2 or 3 years now. He is very happy with it :) No online for him of course :P
Just remember that there are the occasional Rate Mature games that may get your child a little wacky at times like my brother. He played Grand theft auto and started drawing guns in school. I dont recomened rated M games for little ones. There are still tons of lots of fun E (rated for everyone games) and T (for teen) that are really good and not violent for the little ones :)

The ESRB puts ratings on games to help people understand the content of the game. There are a lot of games that are fun and educational, but more then likely they want to play shooting games. There are some games that are more realistic then others, but it in the end it all comes down to the games being games. Good parenting will help the child be able to differentiate between whats real and not.
Online gameplay is a totally different experience. Online gameplay, usually comes with young boys/men who have egos that feel they need to prove something and they are often very competitive. So tempers can flare and inappropriate words can be used, also your child will be talking to random people online. There are parental controls that can be used to block this stuff however.
The Black Xbox 360 is the "Elite" system which comes with a bigger hard drive. The black system is not necessary unless you are a fanboy of Microsoft and or going to be storing a lot of media files on the system. The white Xbox 360 should be plenty for the use of a 9 year old.
In my opinion it comes down to how much you will supervise your child's playing time. Be careful gaming can cause people to play for hours on end, so make sure they go outside as well :)

the router should be plugged into a modem, then plugged into the wall (ethernet and phone cords are different sizes and the cable that should run from the wall to the modem will be a coax cable)

ok, i was originally going to get a PSP for xmas but then i was thinking about an xbox 360 but now i'm being told that the games don't look that good unless you're playing them on an HD TV and well i don't have one of those, so for anyone that has a 360 and possibly without an HD TV, does it make a difference?? We've got one without HD and it's still great. I'm sure it would look better with HD, but it's not necessary. My brother loves the graphics for Gears of War, and it's worth it anyway for Halo3, cuz that's going to be one of the best FPS's ever. If you're going to game while traveling, I guess a PSP would be ok, but the games aren't great, it doesn't have much memory, and the screen is positively tiny. There's a lot better deals for portable gaming systems than the PSP. Games are really good on 360, the only problem is that if you leave it on in a confined area it will overheat. Too bad you missed the $100 rebate at Microcenter last week...

It's compatible with the 360. The only that I don't like about the projector is that it doesn't have HDMI input. Most high def equipments uses HDMI.

Why not buy a broken one for way less then 200 bucks. I bought mine plus 8 game, 2 controllers, 120 gb hd, battery packs and chargers for $150. It had a red ring of death. The problem was, the owners smoked in their apartment, and the dust stuck to the tar that built up inside of the box. It was insulating the console thus overheating the cpu. I ran the case through the dishwasher while cleaned the motherboard and dvd drive with a q-tip. Worked great until I found out is was modded. I would have have never known until Microsoft banned my box.XBOX 360 ...........?

In my opinion the 120GB is almost necessary when you download all the game demos and xbox originals. If you don't plan on buying Xbox Live or even having internet connection to your xbox though. Quite (is this thing on?!) No sound, no loud as all fan, just quite, not even near as hot fun 360 gaming.
Cons:
My heat bill may go up this year. Usually I just turn on my 360 and play call of duty, 30 minutes later you can take off your eskimo gear and put on your swimming trunks (even in 0 degree temperature) and still be hot. NOT SO with the new elite ;( Now when I play the temperature doesn't change! So if you use this instead of buying a heater for your house, buy an older model off the amazon marketplace.
Still no built in wifi (really?)
Comes with stand AV cables (you know, the ones that come with the ARCADE!)
Comes with 2 games you could care less about (last year's bundle wasn't much better either).

What are some must have xbox 360 game/accessories or both for under 40 dollars that i can get i dont know what to get i was thinking about getting assasians creed but not sure so any help appreciated

Assassin's Creed was a decent game. On the games you've mentioned it seems you are into shooters. Maybe try; The Darkness, TimeShift, or Half Life 2 (The Orange Box). Those were really good shooters.
As for accessories; hmm if you are into racing games maybe a racing wheel? Though I doubt they will be under 40 dollars, but who knows I may be wrong. If I were you go for some new games or arcade games rather than accessories.

I am scared to death about all of these technical problems I've been hearing about the Xbox 360 pros. However, I've also heard about the 65nm chip that came out to prevent overheating. Furthermore, I've heard that people that mistreat the 360s get this problem (ventilation), and those who don't, don't get these problems. My question is, are these assumptions true?? How can I prevent, when i get a 360, these problems???Xbox 360??
if you take good care of it it should be fine give it good ventilation and dont leave it on for days at a time pro comes wiht 1 year everyting 3 years red light so your pretty safe red light is the main problem and it comes wiht 3 years so thats good there making improvents and youll get a warranty so you shoul be ok
p.s with a newer realesed box it shouldnt meltXbox 360??

Even with the fan that you attach on the back, the 360 gets so hot that it actually melts some parts of the fan. That's what happened to my friend and I. well used will depend on the user. but what you want to avoid is a first run 360. those are the ones that constantly are getting refurbished. so look at the serial number of the 360 and make sure the last 5 digits don't start with a #4 or 5.
The first of those five digits is the year in which it was made (5 = 2005, 6 = 2006, 7 = 2007). The next two are the week in which it was made (01 = 1st week, 02 = 2nd week up to 52 = last week of the year). The last two digits is where the console was assembled

Even if you are low on cash and can't afford the $450 XBox 360 Elite system, you can still get a core system brand new in the stores for $279 or probably even cheaper at on-line auction sites like eBay or amazon. The only thing with a core system is that it doesn't come with a hard drive, only a memory unit. The memory unit should be just fine for a while until you can get a hard drive. The main reason to have a hard drive is to hold pics and music and stuff. As far as this system compared to other systems...XBox 360 crushes the competition. The games are better (and cheaper) and there are a lot more options of games to choose from. Plus you will find a lot more gamers who own a 360 as opposed to a PS3 because of this price. This is good because you have a lot more people to play against when you go on-line. Hope this helps.

Recently my Xbox 360 got the red ring of death. I called the xbox number and sent it in. in about 5 weeks I got it back and it barely works. It makes all of my games freaze and random colors pop up while Im playing.

Try to powercycle your console = unplugg everything off the xbox and let it sit there for about 2 minutesthen plugg everything back in.
2.Try to clear the cache = go to the system area of your dash board %26gt;%26gt; then go down to memory %26gt;%26gt; then on hard drive press the Y button %26gt;%26gt; then you will be prompted to a screen that'll say rename and format %26gt;%26gt; then in that screen you are going to press this sequence

then itll pop up a screen that will say something liek do you want to perform system maintainance and you will select yes or continue (now just to let you know that is not going to delete anything off the hard drive).
3.Another step is try to clean your games make sure that they are in a good condition also make sure that youre consoel is in a well-ventilated place.
4.Another thing you can try is to sit the console in a different position for instance if the console is sitting horizontal try to sit it vertically.
5.Make sure that the console is set to the correct date and time.
6.Make sure that the console is PAL, is it set to PAL 60Hz
and last but not least try in a different wall socket, you might not be getting enough voltage.
If this doesnt solve the issue you might have to call xbox 18004699269 and get your console fixed is $99.00 dollars and by you paying this repair cost you will automatically get 1 year of warranty that will cover you up for anything that might happen to the xbox plus 1 free month of xbox live.
Unless you get the THREE RED LIGHTS FLASHIN that is covered with a three year warranty from the purshase date..

Once you got the red ring of death they will fix it for you, and if they say they wont they extended warrantys 3 years. So if it was manufactured in 2006 (it says on the xbox) they can fix and have to fix until 2009. Dude dont waste your money on 360 anymore. I got rid of mine after having it repaired 4 times and bought a ps3 and now im a happy customer.
